As a mum you would want to start your new born with the very best, your own breast milk. No woman would deliberately want to substitute her child's food with an artificial substance unless there is a good reason to do so.
Research has established that breast milk is perfectly suited in nourishing infants and
protects them from illness. Breast-fed infants have lower rates of hospital admissions, ear infections,
diarrhea, rashes, allergies, and other medical problems than bottle-fed babies.
The primary reason is nutritional. Human milk contains just the right quantity of fatty acids,
lactose, water, and amino acids for brain development, growth and digestion. Additionally,
human milk directly from the breast is always sterile and uncontaminated by polluted water
or dirty bottles and if you can get your baby to catch on inside those first few minutes of life,
it is imprinted on them and subsequent breast-feeding experiences should become a lot easier.
According to Journal of the American Medical Association, babies who were still breastfed at 12 months had a 40 percent lower chance of developing intestinal infections and a 46 percent lower chance of developing eczema thanks to abundance of immune-protective and anti-infective agents in breast milk including immunoglobulin. At 12 months infants have only half of their total immune system strength. If Breastfeeding continues it strengthens that system thereafter. Breastfeeding keeps a mother and baby close even when they are apart and saves money not having to replace breast milk with infant formulas. You should enjoy such precious time with your baby. Early and regular breastfeeding will help your baby learn good feeding habits and yourself to establish a good milk supply. You should find out as much information as you can, this can involve reading about breastfeeding during your pregnancy, check out relevant groups, speak to your friends and family members and check website information on breastfeeding.
In conclusion, reading and finding information about breast-feeding is one thing. Doing it on your own when the time arrives is something else. Breast milk is the only food your baby needs until at least 6 months of age. Starting as soon after delivery as possible will help your baby learn good feeding habits and yourself to establish a good milk supply. Most newborns breast-feed every two to three hours in the early weeks of their life. Your lifestyle choices are very important. Breastfeeding is not only beneficial for babies but is beneficial to mothers with many direct health benefits. Baby formulas should only be given if breastfeeding is not possible. Having a newborn is a joyful moment but it is also a moment not all of us are fully prepared for. Like every other parent before us we discover that it is not that easy.
